1. The partners finished paraphrasing their original poem (if they didn't finish it on Friday).
2. Two new poems were assigned. See Wikipage under "Just Because" and "I don't understand". These will be due Thursday, posted to the wikipage by 7:35 a.m.
3. The rest of the class was spent defining the literary terms. On the Wikipage, look for the document entitled, "Handbook of Literary Terms for Poetry". Open that up on the computer then go to the ONLINE TEXTBOOK LINK in the right margin of the Wikipage. You hopefully have your login that I gave you at the beginning of the year. Once you get logged on, go to "FIND IT", then click on the triangle beside "RESOURCE CENTER". Go to the Handbook of Literary terms. Copy and paste the bold definition and the regular text explanation for each one on the document. You will also need to write YOUR OWN EXAMPLE when you can. If the term you are defining is a whole poem, for example "sonnet", you do not need to write an example because you would be writing your own poem.
HW: Post a response to peers' poetry by Tuesday at 7:35 a.m. Reply to 2 "I Am" poems and 2 Acrostics.

1. We looked again at Blake's poem, "The Tyger" which we paraphrased together in class. We wrote an overall statement about the main meaning of the poem we found, stating, "In this poem, the speaker is explaining the natural adversaries in the tiger's life." Now that we have the first meaning, we need to find a second so we can compare the two. We identified all of the areas where the writer used literary devices. In the first stanza, he uses alliteration with "burning bright" and "frame thy fearful symmetry", saying that it forces us to slow down and stress those particular words, so they must have a significance to the meaning. Then we looked at words that could have more than one meaning, and saw that "hammer" symbolically represents a constant aggrevation. The poem was written in 1792 when the Industrial Revolution was in full swing. Knowing all of this, we can then look at the tiger/predator as the Industrial Revolution and the prey as nature. The whole poem is a rejection against the growth of industry.
2. Now it's your turn. Take the poem you and your partner were working on together to find the first meaning, and look for meaning number two. Follow these steps: a. identify all of the literary devices used in the poem. b. define all unknown words or words that could have more than one meaning (keep in mind how we define a word today --even one as simple as "hammer" could have a completely different dictionary meaning or symbollic meaning from that time). c. Find when the poem was written by the poet. d. find out what was going on in the poet's life and in his community/country when the poem was written. See if you use all of this information to find another way of looking at the poem. Find a second meaning and do another paraphrase related to that meaning.
3. "Just Because" and "I Don't Understand" poems are due on Thursday.
